Timely installation of winter tires is very important, because the summer "rubber" used in the Russian winter can lead to a tragedy on the road. However, deciding to purchase winter "shoes" for their car, many car owners are faced with the problem of choice.
All tires intended for winter use are divided into two main types, depending on the manufacturer:
- European;
- Scandinavian.
European "rubber" is designed for mild, almost snow-free winters. Typically, the tread of these tires has a checkered pattern. Also, European tires can be recognized by special cuts - sipes. These cuts not only improve traction, but also improve the drying speed of the rubber.
However, European tires have one significant drawback, they are not designed for mounting winter studs. Such "rubber" should be used if in winter you travel by car only within the city, where roads are sprinkled with reagents and cleaned of snow, or you live in the southern region.
The main advantage of Scandinavian tires is that they can be fitted with almost any type of stud. The tread of Scandinavian tires has a fine pattern that allows you to move even on deep snow cover.
Modern manufacturers also offer multi-purpose tires that can be used in both winter and summer. The price for such tires is much higher than for ordinary ones, since several varieties of high-quality rubber are used in their production, and the pattern on the tread is applied using a special technology.
If you plan to drive a car on ice or snow, it is better to prefer soft rubber, as it allows you to provide better grip on the road surface, but if you have to drive on asphalt, opt for a tougher rubber.
The size of winter tires is also very important. Too wide provide a large contact area with the road, but reduce the level of grip due to the fact that the total pressure of the car on the road surface is redistributed. It is better to prefer tires with a higher profile height.
High-quality winter tires can withstand up to 4 seasons of operation, however, if you notice that the level of abrasion of the relief has exceeded 4 mm, it is time to change the “shoes” for the car.
