The body is the main part, the "skeleton" of the car. It is important to protect the car body from damage and corrosion. With the first, everything is very clear, but the second has been controversial for many years.

Causes and locations of corrosion

The corrosion process itself is quite simple. This is the oxidation of metal when exposed to air and water. Accordingly, the most susceptible to corrosion are those parts of the car that are in contact with these two substances at the same time.

A short list of the most corroded body parts.

  • wheel arches;
  • parts of the bottom that are located immediately behind the wheels;
  • spars.
  • the inner part of the threshold;
  • racks;
  • inner lower part of the door;
  • wheel arches.
  • metal, which is located behind the seal of doors, trunk, hood;
  • gutters;
  • the lower part of the door;
  • hidden cavities in the bottom of the trunk, salon;
  • the front of the hood.

Rust can also appear on damaged paintwork (chips).

Methods for Preventing Rust on a Car

Each part of the vehicle has its own anti-corrosion treatment.

The main part of the car is painted in a paint of a certain color, which should protect the main part of metal products from corrosion. For the correct functioning of this anti-corrosion coating, it is necessary to protect it as much as possible from damage. But if the paint was nevertheless damaged, it is necessary to paint over the chip with a special repairing pencil. If the damage is serious (accident), then a complete repainting of the part is required.

There are places where paint just won't help maintain the integrity of the body, or there are places that just can't be painted. Such places are processed additionally.

The bottom of the car is treated with a substance called mastic. It consists of a mixture of resin and bitumen. Sometimes corrosion inhibitors and dyes are added to it, as well as some other substances at the discretion of the manufacturer. Such a layer can be applied with a brush or a spatula, but the method of applying the layer with a spray gun is most often used. You can also buy such a solution in cans.

The interior of the car is unpainted and requires additional anti-corrosion treatment. For the treatment of such cavities, a liquid anticorrosive liquid is used, which is popularly called "Movil". In certain places (they are indicated by the car manufacturer) holes are drilled, and using a special spray gun with a flexible tube and a spray at the end, they are applied to the internal cavities of the car. For convenience, you can use a mini camera. After the procedure, the holes are plugged with special rubber caps, which are sold in car dealerships.

What to do if corrosion has already begun

If corrosion has already begun in some places, then the best solution is to remove it and apply a new anti-corrosion layer. To do this, use a screwdriver, flat screwdriver or other sharp tool to remove the anti-corrosion coating at the place of rust and near it. Next, using sandpaper, you need to clean off the rust to clean metal. For acceleration, you can use an angle grinder or electric drill with the appropriate attachment. After that, apply a rust converter to this surface and wait 2-3 hours. Then rinse it off with water, degrease the surface and apply a new layer of anti-corrosion coating (paint or mastic).
