As you know, brake pads are the most important part of the braking system of cars, and in particular Ford Focus. They must be replaced as they wear out; if the thickness of the brake pad ceases to provide reliable braking, a metallic whistle or grinding sound will appear when the brake pedal is pressed. It is best to replace the pads before these symptoms appear rather than waiting for the brakes to deteriorate.
Necessary
- - anti-rollbacks;
- - jack;
- - pliers;
- - socket wrench;
- - penetrating lubricant;
- - new brake pads;
- - special grease for caliper bolts.
Instructions
Step 1
First, place the machine on a flat surface if it is not possible to use a flyover or lift. Engage first gear or move the lever to the parking position P if the car is equipped with an automatic transmission. Next, be sure to install anti-rollbacks under opposite wheels; for example, when dealing with the rear right wheel, the stops should be placed under the left front and rear wheels.
Step 2
Place the jack under the rear right side of the machine, in front of the wheel and slightly raise the rear. Then unscrew and remove the rear wheel. Disconnect the parking brake cable, which is attached to the brake caliper with a clip. Take pliers and use them to remove the cable and brake hose from the clips.
Step 3
Using a socket wrench, unscrew all caliper bolts and remove from the brake disc. If the bolts do not loosen, apply a penetrating lubricant and try again after a while. To prevent the caliper from hanging on the brake hose, hang it on a wire and remove the brake pads from it.
Step 4
Before installing new pads, the brake cylinders must be pushed back into the caliper. This is done so that new thicker pads fit into place. Next, close the caliper, install it on the brake drum. Apply a special grease to the bolts that is designed for the caliper bolts. If you apply a different lubricant, the rubber bands on the bolts will swell and it will be quite problematic to unscrew them. Tighten the bolts securely and replace the wheel. The brake pads on the left rear wheel are replaced in the same way.
