Choosing the right braking system is very important for vehicles with a dynamic driving style. Both disc and drum brakes can be installed on the rear wheels of the car, each of which has its own characteristics.

Features of disc brakes

The principle of operation of disc brakes is based on a two-way clamping of a rotating metal disc rigidly fixed to the wheel hub. The advantage of disc wheels is their high durability and almost instant response. The wheel pressing force is the same throughout the entire braking time, which is ensured by free air access. At the same time, effective cooling of the disc and the removal of gases formed during friction are guaranteed. The main disadvantage of disc brakes is their high sensitivity to dirt and mechanical stress. Thin discs can be damaged even at rated loads, therefore it is highly discouraged to install low-quality brake systems of this type.

Features of the drum brake system

Drum brakes are protected from dirt, dust and moisture, but they have their drawbacks. Due to the high contact area and low downforce, the brake drum heats up rather quickly. This leads to expansion of the metal and a decrease in pressure. The rapid heating effect is enhanced by the closed type of the system, which prevents rapid cooling. Also, exhaust gases and small particles of worn pads accumulate in the inner cavity of the drum, which clog the friction surface and reduce the friction force. This leads to the fact that after several successive braking at high speed, the drum brakes practically cease to work.

Choice of brakes for rear wheels

For drivers who prefer a dynamic driving style, it is better to install ventilated disc brakes on the rear wheels. This will inevitably be associated with their increased pollution, because the rear wheels get splashes and dirt from the front ones. This problem can be solved by installing good mudguards and protective covers, or by installing perforated brake discs. Also, rear disc brakes are indispensable for cars constantly moving on roads in mountainous terrain: when braking on long descents, they do not overheat and hold the load well.

It is better not to change standard drum brakes to disc brakes unnecessarily. On the contrary, disc brakes can be replaced with drum brakes if the driver does not prefer high-speed driving, and the prospect of more frequent brake pad replacement is not considered a strong argument.
