A snowmobile is quite expensive and is only used during the winter. Therefore, the question is about a universal unit capable of transforming at a certain time of the year. Such a model is available to make with your own hands on the basis of an IZH motorcycle equipped with a sidecar. To do this, it is enough to replace the rear wheel of the motorcycle with a caterpillar and put wide metal skis on the rest of the wheels.

Step 1

Take a duralumin sheet with riveted longitudinal corners as the basis for skis for the front wheel of a motorcycle and sidecar. Thus, longitudinal rigidity is given to the ski. Attach two steel plates to them, which, in turn, perform the function of fastening the wheel. Install the wheel with two bolts. Use stainless steel or brass to reduce friction. You can use polyethylene. Ski the front wheel with an undercut, a steel vertical rib on the lower plane. Remove the rear wheel.

Step 2

Craft a Track Propeller. Weld the frame from 30 and 20 mm steel pipes. Weld four steel plates about 8 mm thick to them. Make longitudinal grooves in the metal plates to connect the front and rear track roller shafts and adjust the track tension.

Step 3

Weld the steel bushing to the vertical tubular arch. The axle of the removed wheel will pass through its hole. Using the lug in the front of the arc, secure the special assembly that fixes the frame to the rear fork of the motorcycle. Two more lugs, weld under the longitudinal pipes to connect the axles of the balancers. Install stops for the threaded track tensioner.

Step 4

Grind the shafts of each front and rear track drum from a 25 mm steel bar. At the ends of the shafts, grind the journals intended for bearing No. 204. Weld the sprockets (Z = 17) in their middle part, and then the flanges of the support drums. You will have the front shaft as the leading one, you will not have to use the rear sprocket, but the shafts will be interchangeable in case of failure.

Step 5

Turn the bearing housings from steel blanks that have axial holes for attachment to the frame. There is also a radial hole for a long stud serving as a track tensioner rod. Make a groove in the housing covers to install the sealing lip.

Step 6

Carve track support drums from duralumin blanks. Assemble the two halves on the six M6 bolts. Clamp the cylindrical rollers between them. The sprocket teeth will transmit the force to the track. Cut it out of four 56 mm wide strips of conveyor belt. Connect them together using steel U-profiles. Bend the profiles yourself - for this, take metal strips 2 mm thick. Thus, the front track shaft will drive the chain drive from the sprocket (Z = 42). Borrow the sprocket itself from the IZH-10 motorcycle and attach it with six M6 bolts to the hub.
