When replacing components and assemblies of a car, it is often required to determine the engine model. With the help of this data, the necessary spare parts are selected or a new motor for the car is ordered.

Instructions

Step 1

Identification of a car engine begins with a number, which, as a rule, is applied on the left side on a special area located on the cylinder block. The marking consists of two parts - a descriptive part consisting of six characters and an indicative part consisting of eight characters. The first character in the form of a Latin letter or number is the year of manufacture of the engine. So, for example, nine corresponds to 2009, letter A to 2010, and B to 2011.

Step 2

The first three digits of the descriptive part indicate the index of the base model, and the fourth is the index of the modification. If the modification index is absent, then zero is set.

Step 3

The fifth digit means the climatic version, and in the last place, the letters usually indicate the diaphragm clutch (A) or the recirculation valve (P). On cars of the VAZ series, the model and engine number are stamped behind the end of the cylinder block.

Step 4

For cars of the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ), a slightly different placement of the engine number is characteristic - in the lower left part of the cylinder block. For Toyota engines, the first digit indicates the serial number in the series, and the second - the engine series. So, for example, engines 3S-FE and 4S-FE, with structural similarity, differ from each other only in displacement.

Step 5

The letter G stands for petrol engines with electronic injection and, as a rule, with a charger or turbocharger, F - cylinders with four valves and two camshafts with a separate drive. T stands for one or two turbines, Z stands for supercharger (e.g. 4A-GZE), E stands for electronic injection, S stands for direct injection and X stands for hybrid engine.

Step 6

Nissan engine markings provide even more information. The first two letters mean the series, the next two - the volume. To obtain the volume in cubic centimeters, this indicator must be multiplied by 100. Engines with 4 valves per cylinder are marked with the letter D, with variable valve timing - V, with electronic multipoint injection - E. For carburetor engines, the designation is S, in the presence of one turbine - T, and two turbines - TT.

Step 7

Mitsubishi engine markings primarily provide information on the number of cylinders. The type of engine is indicated by the letters A and G (internal combustion engine), and D (diesel). Diesel engine markings can be supplemented with the letter M, indicating the presence of an electronically controlled high pressure fuel pump. The next two digits indicate the series, and the letter T indicates the presence of a turbine.
