Step 1
First of all, you need to check the condition of the automatic transmission fluid. To do this, you need to pull out the automatic transmission dipstick and apply some of the liquid from it onto a sheet of white paper. Ideally, the liquid is reddish in color, with no black solids and no metal powder dissolved in it. Black particles indicate severe wear on the friction discs, and metal powder indicates wear on the moving parts of the automatic transmission. A slight black admixture in a small amount indicates the need to change the fluid.
Step 2
It is imperative to check the fluid level. To do this, with the engine running, holding the machine on the brake, you need to engage the gears in the sequence "D" - "2" - "L", pausing for about 2 seconds in each mode and put the selector in the "N" position. Immediately after that, pull out the automatic transmission dipstick, wipe off the liquid from it and insert it back until it stops and pull it out again. The level should be halfway between the top and bottom marks.
Step 3
Ask what liquid is in the box. The type of fluid must be appropriate for the vehicle. On the overwhelming majority of Toyota cars, automatic transmission fluid Dexron Type T-4 is used. There are exceptions, for example the Toyota Mark-2, where the Dexron D-2 is used in the automatic transmission.
Step 4
On a Toyota passenger car, it is imperative to look at the box pallet, whether it is pressed inward from hitting a stone. The state of the pallet determines what capacity the filter has and directly depends on how the automatic transmission will work. At the same time, you need to see if fluid is leaking.
Step 5
It is advisable to carry out a parking test of the torque converter. At the same time, it will become clear how the engine works under load. To do this, with the engine running, keeping the machine on the brake, engage gear "D" and press the accelerator pedal fully for 5 seconds. In this case, there should be no extraneous sounds, the engine speed should be within 1800 - 2200 rpm. It is not recommended to hold the gas for more than 5 seconds, as the fluid in the torque converter may overheat.
Step 6
Then you need to test the box in motion. The goal is to find out how gear changes, try all modes to make sure they work correctly.
