GAZ-21 drivers know that the handbrake on these models is not a very successful design. Its main problem is unreliability. Therefore, if the handbrake has failed again, try replacing it with parts from the GAZ-24.

Necessary

A similar standard parking brake pull handle with a cable, brackets, a lever to increase the force, a return spring for the lever, cables to the rear wheels, "swallow", brake discs, two rollers, levers to the rear drums, M6 bolts

Instructions

Step 1

To repair the parking brake, first remove the engine, otherwise access to the repair site will be very difficult.

Step 2

Now determine where you can place the wiper switch. In the process of work, in its place you will install the pulling handle. Drill a hole in the dashboard and insert the wiper handle there. It will be even more convenient.

Step 3

Install a pull-out brake handle instead of a wiper switch. Place it at a 45 degree angle so it will fit perfectly. That is, its length from below will perfectly reach the engine shield under the heater flare, and from above it can be screwed to the dashboard. To do this, bend the teploshumku and drill three holes for the bolts and cable.

Step 4

Release the cable into the engine compartment, screw the handle to the dashboard. Now make a roller bracket and attach a handle to it through the holes in the engine shield.

Step 5

Then make another bracket and attach the second roller to the side member to the left of the gearbox. Weld the bracket to it.

Step 6

Now put the engine and gearbox in place and proceed to install the lever. To do this, weld a bolt to the side member and find a suitable spring.

Step 7

Replace the support discs and levers in the rear brakes. Pull the cables from the rear drums. Hook them onto the "swallow" - a double bar with hooks for cables and a swinging hub for pulling rod. When performing this operation, first pass the cables through their own brackets and tie them in a knot. This will help you find the length you need. Make sure that the nut is not screwed onto the rod completely, but with a margin of space for the locknut. Without her, everything can fly off instantly.

Step 8

During operation, carefully check that the cables do not fray on the springs.
