The car generator is used to power all electrical devices in the car after starting the engine. It must always be in good condition, since the correct charging of the battery depends on its operation. In addition, the generator makes it possible to additionally connect a variety of different devices and devices to the on-board network. Its technical serviceability should be monitored regularly. You can check the generator with a multimeter or on a special stand.

Instructions

Step 1

Check the regulator relay. It serves to maintain the optimal voltage value in the vehicle's on-board network. The relay-regulator does not allow it to rise to critical levels. Start your car. Place the multimeter switch in "voltage measurement" mode. Measure the power supply to the on-board network. This can be done at the generator outputs or at the battery terminals. It should be in the region of 14-14, 2 V. Press the accelerator. Check the reading again. If the voltage has changed more than 0.5 V, then this is a sign of improper operation of the regulator relay.

Step 2

Check diode bridge. It consists of six diodes. Three of them are positive and three are negative. Place the multimeter switch to "sound" mode. Now, when the tester contacts are closed, a squeak will be heard. Check both forward and backward directions. If a squeak is heard in both cases, then the diode is broken and should be replaced.

Step 3

Check the generator stator. It is a metal cylinder, inside which the winding is laid in a special way. To check, disconnect the stator leads from the diode bridge. Inspect the condition of the winding for mechanical damage and burning. Put the multimeter in "resistance measurement" mode. Check the winding for breakdown. To do this, press one contact of the tester to the stator housing, and the other to one of the winding leads. If the resistance tends to infinity, then it is serviceable. Readings less than 50 KOhm warn of imminent generator breakdown.

Step 4

Check generator rotor. It is a metal rod on which the excitation winding is wound. At one end of it there are slip rings on which the brushes slide. After removing the rotor, inspect the condition of the bearings and the rotor winding. Check the integrity of the field winding. Put the multimeter in "resistance measurement" mode. Measure the value between the two slip rings. If the resistance is low, then the winding is good. Carry out more detailed testing on special test walls of a specialized service station.
