Problems with the generator on the VAZ-2114 are extremely rare. The generator is a simple and reliable mechanism, but if a breakdown happened, it is often the most commonplace. Either the belt is poorly tensioned, or the relay-regulator has burned out, or the brushes are simply worn out.

It is necessary

  • - a set of keys and screwdrivers;
  • - multimeter;
  • - lamp 12 Volts 3 Watt;
  • - connecting wires;
  • - power supply with voltage regulation.

Instructions

Step 1

Check if the warning lamp on the dashboard is on. If it does not light up, and the voltage in the on-board network is very low, then, most likely, there is an open circuit in the power supply circuit of the control lamp, or the filament simply burned out. Replace lamp and check wiring, soldering points, resistor. But if the lamp burns at full heat, then inspect the alternator drive belt. Incomplete incandescence of the lamp indicates that the belt is not tensioned enough. If the lamp is constantly burning at full heat, then the belt has broken. This is the most frequent breakdown, after which there is only a breakdown of the relay-regulator.

Step 2

Check the condition of the belt and the alternator rotor, if the belt tension is normal, and the lamp is on at full heat. Remove the belt, inspect it for damage. Cracks and cuts are a reason to replace the belt. Also inspect the drive pulleys, because they can also wear out, which will not fully transmit the movement. Turn the rotor of the generator by hand, it should rotate without the slightest jamming and backlash. If there is a runout or jamming, then you will have to disassemble the generator and change the bearings.

Step 3

Check the operation of the regulator relay by connecting a voltage regulated power supply and a test lamp to it. The minus power supply is supplied to the regulator body, and a plus must be applied to its terminal. The control lamp must be designed for a voltage of 12 volts, its power must not exceed 3 watts. You need to turn on the lamp between the brushes. When 12 volts are applied to the voltage regulator, the light should be on at full glow. Now increase the voltage to 16-17 volts. After that, the lamp should go out. This means that the relay-regulator is in good order. If the brushes are severely worn, you must, of course, replace the voltage regulator.

Step 4

Check the condition of the rotor winding and slip rings. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the winding. It should be 4.5 ohms. If there is no resistance, then there is a break in the winding. If it differs from the required one, then, most likely, there is an interturn short circuit in the rotor winding. In any of these cases, the ideal solution would be to replace the rotor winding. If there is an opportunity to rewind it, then you can do so.

Step 5

Ring the semiconductor diodes that are in the rectifier unit with a tester. Diodes conduct current in one direction, so you need to connect the test leads of the multimeter to the terminals of the diode. We heard the squeak of the tester, swapped the probes, there should be no squeak. If there is a squeak in both positions, or it is not in both positions, then a diode breakdown has occurred. It is necessary to replace the faulty element, or the entire unit.
