Most modern cars are equipped with maintenance-free batteries. Such batteries do not need to be regularly refilled with distilled water, since its consumption is low. However, the need for this may still arise.

Step 1

If your car starts to start poorly, the battery may be to blame. For maintenance-free batteries, the case is completely closed, there are no holes for filling with water. The labyrinth vapor recovery system condenses and completely returns the evaporated electrolyte. However, a small portion of the water evaporates through the vent. You may be able to restore the functionality of your battery by topping up with distilled water.

Step 2

Open the hood. Look at the peephole on the density indicator. Green - the battery is fully charged, black - recharging is required, white indicates a low electrolyte level.

Step 3

The maintenance-free battery has a fully sealed housing. Peel off the sticker. Do not open the battery cover as it will still be difficult to reattach it later.

Step 4

The internal structure of the chamber and partitions are clearly visible through the transparent plastic cover. It is possible to determine the number of cans and, therefore, the place of filling the water or checking the density of the electrolyte. Use a handy tool, such as a thin awl, to make holes. This must be done as accurately as possible.

Step 5

Using a disposable syringe, little by little (5 ml) add distilled water through the hole in the jar where the density indicator is located. After the appearance of black or green in the eye, add another 20 ml.

Step 6

To determine the electrolyte level, lower the needle to the inside of the can and pull the stem in the opposite direction. As soon as electrolyte is drawn into the syringe, mark its level with a marker on the needle. If the battery is made of light-colored plastic, the electrolyte level can be read through. Measure it with a ruler.

Step 7

Add water to the remaining jars until the electrolyte level in them reaches the mark on the needle.

Step 8

Seal the holes with sealant or pick up rubber plugs. Shake the battery lightly to mix the electrolyte.
