Inspection and tightening of the belt on the 21124 engine should be carried out every 15,000 thousand km. The belt must be clean, free from dirt and oil residues, as dirt on the belt will shorten its life. The belt tension must also be correct, excessive tension leads to a rapid breakage of the belt. The planned belt replacement is carried out after 45,000 km.
The timing belt used on the VAZ 21124 car rotates the pump and two camshafts. The belt must be tightened every 15,000 km; replacement is carried out when the resource is depleted or when the belt breaks.
Change the belt only when the engine is cold, otherwise there is a risk of burns. Since the car will be jacked up during the work, it is necessary to prepare an emphasis under the car and place blocks under the rear wheels. Next, you need to disconnect the terminals and remove the battery from the car, as well as remove the decorative trim for the engine.
Required tools and equipment
To replace the timing belt on a VAZ 21124 car, you will need the following tools and accessories:
- a 5 mm hex key;
- wrenches for 17 and 19;
- a special key for tensioning the belt;
- a device for fixing the camshaft pulleys;
- jack;
- balloon wrench.
Sequence of work
For the convenience of work, you need to remove the absorber and set it aside, for this, without removing the hoses, remove the absorber mounting bracket. Next, use a hex wrench to unscrew the bolts and remove the upper protective belt cover. Then unscrew 2 more bolts and remove the bottom of the cover.
Use a wheel wrench to loosen the front right wheel bolts. Raise the car with a jack, place a stop under it and remove the wheel. Then remove the right side of the engine mudguard.
Partially unscrew the upper generator nut and slide it towards the engine. Remove the alternator belt from the pulleys.
Turn the crankshaft with a 19 key by the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt and set the piston 1 of the cylinder to TDC. Caution - never turn the crankshaft by the camshaft pulleys. Turn the crankshaft until the mark on the crankshaft pulley matches the mark on the oil pump cover and the marks on the camshaft pulleys with the marks on the rear timing belt cover.
Secure the crankshaft pulley from turning and unscrew the bolt securing the pulleys to the crankshaft with a 19 wrench and remove the alternator belt pulley. Install the tool and fix the camshafts. Then loosen the nuts on the idler and idler rollers a few turns and loosen the tension on the toothed belt. The timing belt can now be removed.
After removing the belt, check the condition of the rollers and, if any, play or noise during rotation, replace the rollers.
Installing the belt
Make sure the mark on the crankshaft pulley and the mark on the oil pump housing match, and put a new belt on the crankshaft pulley. Next, slide the left half of the belt from the outside of the pump pulley and from the inside of the tension roller.
Pass the right half of the belt through the inside of the idler roller and, without sagging, slide it over the camshaft pulleys. When putting on, the right side of the belt must be tightened in the areas between all three pulleys.
After installation, we tighten the belt with a tension roller and check the installation according to the marks. If the marks match, put the alternator belt pulley in place and crank the crankshaft 2 turns and again check the coincidence of the marks. If the marks do not match, reinstall the belt.
After the final installation of the belt according to the marks, we install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
