Almost every car owner knows what a VIN code is. But not everyone knows where you can see it, how it is attached and why you need to know its possible locations.
The VIN code of any car can be found first of all from the technical passport. However, in addition to the documentation, the manufacturer places the alphanumeric certificate directly on the car itself. Duplication of the code is caused by an elementary necessity - protection against theft: it is much easier to forge any documents than to interrupt the alphanumeric code on the car body. In this case, the location of the code can be very different.
Where is the VIN code
The easiest way to find out is by carefully reading the technical documentation that came with the vehicle. Labeling methods, location of identification number can vary greatly, which is associated with the preferences of manufacturers. However, most often the VIN code can be found in the following places:
- the upper left part of the dashboard, the bottom of the windshield (the number is located in such a way that you can see it only from the outside);
- near the driver's seat, at the bottom of the arch (you can view the code when the door is in the open position);
- under the driver's seat (to see the license plate, you will have to move the seat, fold back the mat);
- under the hood, on a special marking plate fixed with screws and rivets in an easily visible place.
Why do I need a VIN code
Knowing the structure of the code, consisting of 17 characters, you can find out the country of manufacture of the vehicle, year of manufacture, manufacturer. Also, the number contains encrypted modification of the car, body type, engine. The last characters indicate the serial number. Having made a decision to purchase a car, it is necessary to carefully study everything, even the most secluded places, where the identification code is located. Usually the problem is that the number plate is located in places that are difficult to read. Knowing this, attackers often change only one number; one that is located in a convenient location. Their calculation is that the buyer is too lazy to look into a hard-to-reach place.
When purchasing a car (used), be sure to pay attention to the VIN plate and its fasteners. If the plate is attached by means of rivets, then it is worth taking a closer look to see if there are any dents or scratches nearby. Removing the record and putting it back in place without leaving any traces is quite difficult. Knowing what an identification code is and where it is located, you can be sure that the purchased car will not cause problems in the future.
