As you know, gears in a car transfer torque from the engine to the drive of another unit. One of their main characteristics is the gear ratio. The gear ratio is the ratio of the number of teeth of the driven gear to the number of teeth of the driving gear. By using gears with different numbers of teeth, the torque can be adjusted.
Instructions
Step 1
Calculate the gear ratio, using its definition, according to the formula: K = K1 / K2, where K1 is the number of teeth of the driven gear, and K2 is the number of teeth of the drive gear. For example, to calculate the gear ratio of torque from the gearbox to the wheels, you need to calculate the ratio of the driven gear of the differential and the gear of the secondary shaft in the gearbox, or, as motorists call it, find the gear ratio for the main pair.
Step 2
Count the number of teeth of the gear wheel of the secondary shaft of the gearbox, let's say there are 15 teeth. Count their number on the driven gear that is attached to the differential, let it have 51 teeth. Substitute the numbers in the above formula: 51/15 = 3, 4. The resulting number will be the gear ratio for the main pair of this gear train. Consequently, the driven gear of the differential will rotate 3.4 times slower than the drive gear of the transmission shaft when it rotates.
Step 3
Calculate the gearbox ratios for each gear using the formula below. The closer the gear ratios are, the smoother and faster the vehicle will accelerate with sequential gear changes. Calculate how many times the engine speed will decrease when changing gear, dividing the gear ratio of the lowest gear by the gear ratio of the highest.
Step 4
Draw conclusions from the calculations made. You need to know: the higher the gear ratio, the faster the car will pick up speed, but the gears will need to be changed more often. By installing a pair with a lower gear ratio, you can increase the maximum speed of the car, but the car will accelerate worse. Calculate, if necessary, using the above formula, the gear ratio for the gears of any components in your car.
