Removing, replacing and installing a gearbox on VAZ cars is one of the most laborious and time-consuming work. If possible, invite an assistant to perform a replacement, because the box weighs quite heavy, so it is difficult to lift it alone.
Necessary
- - observation pit or overpass;
- - a set of tools for car repair;
- - assistant.
Instructions
Step 1
To replace the gearbox on rear-wheel drive VAZ cars, install the car on a viewing ditch, on an overpass or hang it on a lift. Disconnect the negative battery cable from its terminal. Then disconnect the propeller shaft from the transmission and remove the propeller shaft. Remove the front exhaust pipe and disconnect the terminals from the reversing light switch.
Step 2
Inside the passenger compartment, remove the gearshift lever decorative cover. Remove the mat from under it by prying with a screwdriver and removing the rings that hold it. Find the 4 screws securing the gearbox cover under the mat and unscrew them. Remove the cover and push the gear lever down, then use a thin screwdriver to remove the locking sleeve from the lever groove. Remove the gearshift lever from its mounting socket.
Step 3
Insert a mounting paddle between the engine and the bolster. Striking it with a hammer, bend the eye washer of the upper bolt of the clutch housing. Remove this bolt. Then unscrew the two upper and one lower bolts securing the starter to the clutch housing. Unscrew the clutch housing cover bolts. Using pliers, unscrew the fastening nut of the flexible shaft of the speedometer from the drive housing.
Step 4
Install a stop under the bottom of the gearbox, and then unscrew the remaining bolts of the clutch housing. Remove the cross member securing nuts, slide the transmission back and remove it from the vehicle. Install the new box in the reverse order of removal. Before installation, lubricate the spline end of the input shaft with a thin layer of SHRUS-4.
Step 5
To replace the gearbox on front-wheel drive VAZ cars, first remove the crankcase protection by unscrewing the bolts of its fastening. Disconnect the earth cable from the clutch housing, which is secured with a separate bolt. On the end of the clutch cable, loosen the nuts and remove this end from the clutch lever. Disconnect the harness from the starter traction relay terminal. Disconnect the wire from the starter traction relay contact bolt.
Step 6
Remove the starter by unscrewing the three nuts of its fastening. Having removed the clamp, disconnect the gearbox drive rod from the hinge end. Disconnect the speedometer drive cable. Disconnect the reversing light switch wire. Loosen the suspension arm fastening nuts. After unscrewing the bolts securing the bracket to the body, spread both braces to the sides.
Step 7
Remove the cotter pin of the tie rod and pivot arm fixing nut and unscrew this nut. Use a puller to press out the tie rod ball joint pin from the strut pivot arm. After that, unscrew the 2 bolts and disconnect the ball joint. Using a pry bar, squeeze out the shank of one of the inner CV joints of the drive from the gearbox and take it to the side. Insert a special plug or an old CV joint instead. Then do the same with the second CV joint.
Step 8
After unscrewing the mounting bolts, remove the clutch housing shield. Loosen the bolts and nuts securing the clutch housing to the engine block. Install a block thick enough on the fender flanges to support the engine through the wooden support spacers. Use a strong rope to tie the engine to the timber by the eyelet. Remove the nuts securing the rear and left engine mounts. Unscrew the nut and remove the bolt of the left support of the VAZ engine. Having finally unscrewed the bolts and nuts securing the gearbox to the clutch housing and removing the left engine support, move the box away from the engine in a horizontal plane and remove the gearbox. In doing so, be careful not to damage the clutch diaphragm spring.
