If your fuel gauge does not function, but there is no opportunity to make repairs or replace a part with a new one, you will have to improvise. It will not be possible to measure the amount of fuel remaining in the tank with improvised means, however, having calculated the average consumption and knowing the volume of the fuel tank, you can determine how much fuel is left.
It is necessary
- - paper and pencil / pen;
- - instruction manual for your vehicle;
- - fuel for your vehicle;
- - fuel canister.
Instructions
Step 1
Determine the volume of your fuel tank. Typically, this kind of information is contained in the vehicle operating instructions. If you do not have operating instructions, then you can find out the necessary information from the authorized dealer who sells your vehicle. If this option is not possible, then look at the official website of the manufacturer, but in this case, you should be careful and double-check the information received on several Internet resources.
Step 2
Refill the fuel tank. If you are afraid that there is an insignificant amount of fuel left in your tank, then it is better not to risk it and add a few liters from the canister to the tank. Next, you should drive to the gas station and fill the tank of your vehicle to the maximum level, and also refill your canister, which will be useful to you later.
Step 3
Write off the odometer reading. It is best to do this directly while filling the fuel tank or immediately after, without leaving the gas station. You will need this information later in order to determine the amount of fuel. Rewrite the vehicle's mileage and keep your record.
Step 4
Use up fuel. This step can take anywhere from a few days to a week, depending on how often you use your vehicle. After there is no fuel left in the tank at all, rewrite the odometer reading again. Add fuel to the tank from a can.
Step 5
Calculate the fuel consumption of your vehicle. Subtract the first one from the last odometer reading to find out how many kilometers you have driven on one tank. Now divide the resulting number by the number of liters in your fuel tank: the resulting number will be your fuel consumption. Now you know how many kilometers your vehicle can travel, having consumed 1 liter of fuel, which means you can always determine the amount of fuel in your fuel tank, taking into account the kilometers traveled.
