The painting of the model differs depending on the purpose pursued. Play painting involves simple techniques, 1-2 layers of paint. The task is to quickly paint a lot of models. Artistic painting is rarely used, as it is painstaking and takes hundreds of hours of time. Painting for the competition is a unique and expensive job, costing hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars. Painting for money is a way of making money for professional artists. The quality depends on the price and the author.

Step 1
When choosing between paint or enamel, be guided by the principle: the paint is not washed off after staining, the enamel is washed off. Nitro paint is easier to use, but it has a pungent odor and, if handled carelessly, can ruin the transparent or plastic part. Water-based and acrylic paints are diluted with water or alcohol and work well if the model is painted without experience in this. Do not mix paints from different manufacturers and paints on a different basis! When using an airbrush, paint is enough for more models: one can for 2-3 medium models for an airbrush or for 1 model when using a brush.
Step 2
When choosing a primer (prevents the paint from falling off), keep in mind that different primers are needed for paints with different bases. No primer is needed only in the case of a combination of a brush, plastic and nitro paint. In all other cases, a primer is required. Select white for the ground color if the model will be painted in light tones, or gray if the model will be painted in dark tones.
Step 3
The varnish allows the model to be washed in water without compromising its appearance. When choosing a varnish, keep in mind that nitro paint can be combined with any varnish, and water and alcohol-soluble paints - only with a varnish corresponding to the base. When using water-borne acrylic paints, each layer is varnished.
Step 4
Choose a solvent according to the instructions on the paint can. If paint is thinned with water, use boiled or distilled paint. When using paint in aerosol cans, no solvent is needed. After finishing work, the same solvent can be used to wash the tool. When using enamels, a specialized remover is purchased.
Step 5
When choosing between painting with a brush or using an airbrush, keep in mind that an airbrush will provide quality and speed, but is expensive. The brush is cheap and affordable, but not everyone can paint it smoothly and with high quality. When using an airbrush, an indoor hood is required! Beginners can use aerosol cans instead of an airbrush.
Step 6
In the process of assembling the model, carefully study every detail. Many parts will become unavailable for painting after assembly is complete. Therefore, paint such details in advance.
Step 7
Degrease the surface with alcohol or benzine before painting. After degreasing, do not touch the treated surface with your hands! Remove any loose speck or hair with a degreased brush. In preparation for painting a rough surface, treat it with M40 sandpaper or finer, previously moistened with water.
Step 8
It is useful to apply a protective coating to the transparent parts of the model before priming. For example, masking tape. Remove this coating only after final varnishing. The priming procedure itself is carried out by uniformly applying the primer to the model. The resulting drops and drips are not erased, but are removed with the finest sandpaper after drying. If in the process of intermediate sanding the layer of primer is completely erased, apply a new one in this place. After intermediate sanding, the final coat of primer is applied.
Step 9
The base paint (enamel) should be applied in several thin layers. Be guided by the rule: the number of layers should be as large as possible, and the layers themselves should be as thin as possible. If water-soluble acrylic paints were used, each layer is covered with a clear varnish.
Step 10
When applying camouflage, light tones are applied first, then dark ones. Unpainted surfaces are protected (with a sheet of paper, tape or special liquids). In this operation, you should also apply staining in several layers.
