Few people are satisfied with the sound quality in the car. Sometimes you get the impression that it all goes into the trunk, leaving only noise in the cabin. This is especially noticeable on budget cars with a hatchback body, but sedans often suffer from this disease. The only way out of this situation is to install an acoustic shelf. But it is expensive to buy ready-made - manual work after all, and sometimes it is impossible to find the right one - there is no car suitable for your model or the design does not suit. There is a way out - to make the shelf yourself.
Necessary
Plywood 7 mm, carpet, tape measure, ruler, jigsaw, drill, screws and self-tapping screws, construction stapler, glue for wood (fabric-wood), perforated steel tape, corners, hinges, piano hinges
Instructions
Step 1
The first thing to do is take the dimensions of your shelf. Immediately it is worth making a reservation that in a sedan, the shelf needs to be done with one element, even if the regular one consists of several. In a hatchback, it is also possible to manufacture a shelf with one element of the sidewall and a shelf, but in this case you will lose the functionality of the luggage compartment of a car with this type of body, optimal for a hatchback is the manufacture of shelves and sidewalls in the factory format. The dimensions of the elements should be measured in the position they are in the car. Draw a sketch on a piece of paper and write down the measurements, write down the dimensions of the shelf elements removed from the car through a hyphen, so you get the tolerance fields.
Step 2
In order not to spoil the plywood and not to redo everything over again, first apply the dimensions of the blanks on thick cardboard (a box from a TV or refrigerator), cut it out with a margin and fit it in place in the body of the car. For a hatchback, the sidewalls should initially be made, they are usually mirrored, therefore, having made one, you can easily make the second one. When the details of the sidewalls are ready, you can make a test fitting, fix the fasteners and install them in their regular places. Now they re-measure the distances for the main shelf and cut the shelf elements along them.
Step 3
Connect the shelf elements together with hinges, install the hinge fasteners and try on. If all the parts lie in their regular places without tension, the seat back is installed and the tailgate closes without interference, then we can assume that the hardest part of the work has been done. Now you need to decide on the location of the speakers, you can install both standard round speakers and more powerful and optimal sounding 6x9 inches. If they stand on the side elements of the shelf, then try them on on the installed sidewalls, so that the elements of the car body would not interfere with their placement later. Then we cut out the holes for the speakers or make directional podiums for them.
Step 4
When all the work with the wood is finished, we proceed to pasting the elements with a cloth - carpet. Cut pieces of fabric with a margin of 3-4 cm on each side, this is necessary to wrap the edges of the shelf elements. We glue the front of the shelf and the fabric from the seamy side, putting the fabric on the shelf, carefully smooth the fabric over the surface, the carpet is a very pliable fabric, it stretches well along the bends and grooves. We fix the edges of the carpet with a construction stapler. Then we install the sidewall fasteners, speakers and place everything in its regular places. Now you will be amazed at how the music in the cabin began to sound.
