A starter motor is needed in order to spin the motor shaft to the frequency that is necessary to start it. For BMW cars, it is located on the side at the junction of the cylinder block.
Instructions
Step 1
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Remember to do this with the ignition off. The battery in many cars is located in the luggage compartment on the right side. Do not forget that when the battery is disconnected, the faults from the memory of the control devices may be reset, so read this data before removing the starter. This is best done at a service station.
Step 2
Carefully cover the positive terminal of the battery to prevent accidental contact. Jack up the vehicle and place it on stands. Carefully detach the cover from the engine compartment.
Step 3
Remove the noise insulation under the starter and remove the bolt. On some models, you will have to disconnect the fuel hoses near the starter motor. Remember to take precautions when removing hoses. Do not use fire or hot objects or materials near the work area. Be sure to provide good ventilation, as the fumes emitted are poisonous.
Step 4
Then disconnect the wires. Terminal 30 is the thick wire that comes from the positive of the battery and terminal 50 comes from the ignition switch. Be sure to label the wires after removing them to make it easier for you to re-assemble them.
Step 5
Remove the bolts that secure the starter to the transmission side. Carefully remove the starter from the box flange and remove it. Then carefully inspect the starter gear and ring gear. Replace these parts if damaged.
Step 6
Install in the reverse order. Make sure the wires snap into place according to the markings. Remember to reconnect the negative battery cable and reset the clock.
