Step 1
Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery using a 10 wrench. Power to the starter motor is supplied to the solenoid relay directly from the battery, therefore, a short circuit may occur when dismantled. Removing the negative terminal is the first step when repairing a car under the hood. This is where the wires are concentrated, not protected by fuses. For convenience, the battery can be removed from the vehicle for the duration of the repair. In the future, you will have to take out the starter, and the amenities there are not very good, since there is quite a bit of space.
Step 2
Jack up the right side of the vehicle if there is no inspection hole. Be careful that the car does not fall on you when you are under it. Substitute a rack under it, and if one is not available, then wooden blocks will do. You can first put the wheel flat, and on it a few bars. The ideal option would be a small stump that is suitable in height. Now that you have access to the engine compartment from below, prepare the box and socket wrenches. Next, you need to unscrew the nuts from the studs.
Step 3
Unscrew the lower nut with a 13 socket wrench with a universal joint and an extension. Unfortunately, on the classic, this nut is not very well located, you have to use such tricks. True, if you try, you can unscrew this nut with a spanner wrench, only in time this action will last longer. And all for the reason that it is not possible to make more than a quarter of a turn with a spanner key. Yes, and a socket wrench with a cardan is not easy, since you only need to get to the nut from below. If you do not want to bother with removing the starter in the future, you can not tighten the lowest nut during assembly. Even on the top two, it adheres perfectly, just put washers.
Step 4
Unscrew the top nuts using a box or open-end wrench. There is much more space at the top, so there is no need to use a gimbal and socket wrench. Do not lose the washers installed on the studs. When you unscrew the nuts, the starter will hang on the studs and rest against the leg. But it's too early to shoot.
Step 5
Disconnect the thin wire going to the solenoid relay. Then unscrew the nut that secures the red thick wire to the relay. Take the wires to the side, fix them so that they do not interfere. Now you can remove the starter, you need to carefully remove it from the seat so as not to damage the pipes and wires.
