The speedometer cable makes a certain number of revolutions every kilometer. It is used by the vehicle speed sensor to calculate the distance traveled. If the gauge needle fluctuates, this indicates that the speedometer cable is worn out. In this situation, it is recommended to dismantle the old cable and install a new one. Consider replacing the speedometer cable using the example of a Volkswagen Jetta.

Necessary

  • - Phillips screwdriver;
  • - spanner key;
  • - speedometer cable.

Instructions

Step 1

Consider replacing the speedometer cable using the example of a Volkswagen Jetta. Disassemble the front panel first. To do this, unscrew the mounting screws in the amount of 4 pcs. One screw is located above the leftmost duct. If the steering wheel gets in the way, then it can be removed. Unscrew and remove the instrument panel itself, which is secured with two screws on the sides. Also remove the connector from the back with wires. The cable will fall out of the installed groove on its own, no effort is needed.

Step 2

Open the hood and pull off the protective panel under the windshield, disconnect the plug of the electronic control unit, because it will interfere during operation. Then slowly pull the cable out. Remove the cable from the gearbox, it is attached with one bolt. When removing the bolt, be careful not to lose the gear. After the last procedure, you can start installing a new cable.

Step 3

When buying a cable, pay attention to its length. It should be no less than the original version, a little more is allowed, but you need to look at how the cable is located in the gearbox and near the instrument panel. Place a few drops of oil on a new cable to prevent it from wearing out prematurely. Pull it under the hood through the grooves and do not forget to put the rubber seals in place, there should be two of them.

Step 4

Replace the instrument panel. First, insert the chip with the wires into place, then put the cable and secure the shield with screws. Check if the cable is in place. To do this, take the other end of the cable and twist the end of the cable counterclockwise with sharp movements. If the cable is installed correctly, the speedometer arrows will move sharply. The gear should be purchased and a new one should be installed if the old one is damaged. Place the gear on the other end of the cable and connect to the transmission. Tighten the bolt next, that's all, the cable has been replaced.

Step 5

Replace the cable yourself or contact a specialized workshop, where you will be dismantled and replaced with high quality and guaranteed.
