The cable is one of the main parts of a mechanical speedometer with which it is activated. Experiencing significant loads during operation, it wears out over time and must be replaced. One of the signs of trouble with the cable is the shaking of the speedometer needle while driving, which indicates the presence of a kink and its imminent failure.

Instructions

Step 1

Dismantling the cable is carried out in several stages. First, it is necessary to remove the combined device, then disconnect the cable from it and remove it from the gearbox, while squeezing the safety clips. At the end of this operation, disconnect the speedometer pin connection.

Step 2

Then you can pull out the speedometer cable through the front wall. You just need to install a new one to replace the old one, while paying special attention to the correct position of the rubber tip.

Step 3

However, for each brand of car, the replacement of the cable has its own characteristics. Here's how, for example, you can disconnect the cable on a Renault19 car. Care should be taken when removing the cable as most of the parts are made of plastic. The dashboard is removed as follows. First, disconnect the ground wire from the battery, then remove the steering wheel.

Step 4

After that, unscrewing the four T-20 screws, disassemble the lower part of the steering rack lining and remove the upper part of the steering rack lining. Then unscrew the three T-20 screws on the lower panel cladding and remove it.

Step 5

Unscrew the upper and lower fastening screws and remove the fastening of the ignition lock pads, for which it is necessary to press the fastener to the steering column and at the same time slightly pull it forward. The speedometer cable is attached with a plastic chip at the end of the cable. Squeeze the chip with your fingers and turn it so that the latches are released, pull it and remove the cable from the device.

Step 6

The next operation is to remove the dashboard and disconnect the connectors. Remove the dashboard from the socket and, if necessary, disconnect the remaining connectors. Carry out the assembly very carefully so that all the connectors and the speedometer cable fit exactly into place. Before completing the assembly, be sure to check the voltage at the lamps. The correctness of replacing a faulty speedometer cable is checked while driving. In this case, the speedometer needle should move along the scale smoothly, without jerking.
