The most common reasons for replacing the parking brake (or parking brake) cables are breakage, pulling or jamming inside the shells. To understand whether it is necessary to change the parking brake cables or not, make the following diagnostics: pull the parking brake cables and find a hill with a steep slope (up to 25% inclusive). Stop the car on this hill and raise the handbrake lever to the maximum position. If your car starts to roll back, and you are sure that the brakes of the rear wheels are working, then the problem is in the parking brake cables.
It is necessary
- - two new parking brake cables;
- - wheel chocks;
- - lift or "pit";
- - jack;
- - support posts;
- - a standard wheel key or a knob with a head on "17", or a key-cross on "17";
- - two keys for "13";
- - spanner wrench or head on "10";
- - slotted screwdriver;
- - a spanner or a hexagon high head on "7".
Instructions
Step 1
The principle of operation of the parking brake system used on VAZ cars, in general, has not changed since the release of the first car VAZ-2101 ("kopeck"). The handbrake lever is connected to two cables going, respectively, to the brakes of the left rear and right rear wheels. When you lift the parking brake lever up, you tighten the parking brake cables. The cables, in turn, move the drive lever located in the rear wheel brakes. As a result, the brake pads come into motion due to the movement of the drive lever and adjoin the rear wheel drums, fixing them in one position.
Step 2
You will get acquainted with the replacement of the parking brake cables using the example of the VAZ-2170 (Priora) car. Be sure to replace two parking brake cables at the same time.
Step 3
Place wheel chocks under the wheels. Loosen the bolts of the left rear and right rear wheels using a standard wheel wrench or a wrench with a "17" head (you can use a cross wrench on "17"). Engage first gear. Move the parking brake lever to the lowest position. Remove the wheel chocks. Raise the car on a lift. If you are lifting the vehicle with a jack, support it on two support stands. Unscrew the rear wheel bolts completely and remove the wheels.
Step 4
Start by replacing the left cable. While holding the parking brake lever adjusting nut with a "13" wrench, unscrew the lock nut with a wrench of the same size. Then unscrew the adjusting nut using a "13" wrench.
Step 5
Remove the cable equalizer from the handbrake arm pull and pull out the front handbrake cable ends from the equalizer. Pull the end of the left cable sheath out of the bracket.
Step 6
Now, with a head or a "10" wrench, partially unscrew the nut securing the bracket to the rear suspension beam and remove the parking brake cable sheath from it. Pull the cable out of the holder on the rear suspension beam mounting bracket.
Step 7
Look closely at the underside of the car. You will see a bracket that holds the parking brake cable. Take a slotted screwdriver, bend the bracket and pull the cable out of the holder. You will find another bracket on the underside of the car in front of the fuel tank. Pull the cable out of it.
Step 8
Using a "7" spanner wrench or a "7" hexagon high head, unscrew the two wheel guide pins and remove the brake drum of the left rear wheel. Look closely at the brake mechanism. You will see how the parking brake cable is hooked into the parking brake lever. Disconnect the rear end of the cable from the parking brake lever. Withdraw the end of the parking brake cable from the hole in the brake shield and remove the left cable.
Step 9
After performing similar operations, remove the right handbrake cable. Install new cables in reverse order.
Step 10
When you have finished installing the new cables, adjust the parking brake. To do this, take two keys on "13" and, holding the adjusting nut with a key, slightly unscrew the lock nut. Now turn the adjusting nut clockwise and tighten the parking brake cables. After completing the adjustment, secure the adjusting nut with the locknut. Check if the rear wheels rotate freely when the handbrake lever is lowered to the lowest position.
