When, when driving at a speed of more than 30 km / h, a "howl" or "hum" is heard from the side of the rear axle of a VAZ (classic) car, then it is time to check the rear gearbox. This happens when an unacceptable gap is established between the elements of the main pair. It is best not to check and repair yourself, but entrust it to specialists.

Necessary

  • - key for 13;
  • - key 19;
  • - container for oil;
  • - lead oxide;
  • - an adjustment stand.

Instructions

Step 1

Place the vehicle on a lift or viewing ditch. In the latter case, fix the front wheels with stop shoes.

Step 2

Take the key 13 and disconnect the cardan from the rear gearbox. The nuts are disposable, so they should be replaced with new ones when reassembling.

Step 3

Take a container (3 l) and a 19 spanner. Unscrew the plug on the gearbox and drain the oil.

Step 4

Hang the rear wheels from a jack or lift. Take them off. Pull out the axle shafts on both sides.

Step 5

Take a 13 wrench and unscrew the bolts that attach the gearbox to the "stocking" (rear axle casing). It is relatively heavy, so be careful.

Step 6

Fasten the gearbox to a workbench and inspect the connection point between the parts of the main pair. In other words, the contact spots between them in the forward and reverse course. They should be right in the middle.

Step 7

Decrease the thickness of the adjusting ring if the spots are above the middle position, and increase the thickness when below.

Step 8

Install the rear axle gearbox on the stand and check the quality of engagement. To do this, first lubricate the working surface of the teeth of the main gear with lead oxide with a thin layer.

Step 9

Turn on the stand and, using the levers, brake the axle shafts so that a trail of engagement remains on the teeth. Stop the stand and run it in the opposite direction and slow down in the same way as in the first case in order to get “spots” on the other side.

Step 10

Stop and turn off the machine and inspect the tooth surfaces. When properly engaged, the adjustment is complete. Otherwise, disassembly of the gearbox is required.

Step 11

When assembling, repeat the preload of the pinion roller bearings while checking the torque. Preload the differential box roller bearings and adjust the side play of the final drive gears.
