The need to replace the brake pads on BMW vehicles can be recognized by the indicator on the instrument panel, which lights up when the degree of wear of the pads approaches a critical value. If a braking system with six piston calipers (or a more complex modification) is not installed on the car, work on replacing the pads can be performed independently, without the use of special equipment.
It is necessary
- - brake pads;
- - standard set of tools;
- - a set of TORX keys;
- - adjustable wrench;
- - WD-40.
Instructions
Step 1
Use a jack to raise the car, place it on supports, remove the wheels from the axle on which you want to replace the pads. Front and rear brake pad wear is generally not the same, so there is no need to change parts on all four calipers at once. However, it is worth checking the stock of the working surface of the pads that do not require replacement.
Step 2
Disconnect the wear sensor connector. Remove the two plastic caps from the guide screws of one of the brake calipers and apply WD-40 fluid to the screws. Do not allow liquid to come into contact with the brake disc and the rubber parts of the caliper.
Step 3
A few minutes after the WD-40 has worked, use the correct size TORX wrench to unscrew the rails. When removing the screws, use a long, sturdy tube for the key as a lever - this way you will need less effort to complete this step.
Step 4
Then you can remove the caliper from the brake disc. In this case, the inner pad must remain in the caliper. Remove both pads from the piston. Please note that there is also a contact wear indicator, which must also be removed to avoid damage when installing a new pad.
Step 5
Now lift the hood and unscrew the brake reservoir cap. Return to the caliper and press in the piston until it stops using a large flat head screwdriver and an adjustable wrench. Install first the inner and then the outer pad in the piston and place the assembled caliper on the brake disc.
Step 6
Screw in the guide screws, tighten them and put on the caps. Using a screwdriver, press the wear gauge into the socket of the inner pad and attach it with a bracket. Connect the connector.
Step 7
Follow the steps to replace the pads in the calipers on the other side and, if necessary, on the other axle. After all the pads are installed, screw on the brake reservoir cap in the engine compartment. Sit in the driver's seat, start the engine and press the brake pedal several times (until the pad wear indicator goes out).
