At a car service or in a car repair shop, the replacement of the VAZ-2109 radiator is carried out with the removal of the engine from the car. But in conditions where there is no suitable lift, you have to use another method, which is more convenient from the point of view of the car owner, who prefers to repair the car on his own.
Necessary
- - coolant;
- - tank for collecting coolant;
- - new radiator;
- - wrenches М8 and М10;
- - screwdriver.
Instructions
Step 1
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal. Make sure the engine is completely cool. Remove the crankcase protection. Open the heater tap and the expansion tank cover completely. Unscrewing the drain plug, drain the liquid from the cooling system into a previously prepared container (at least 5 liters). Place a separate container under the radiator drain hole, unscrew the plug and drain the radiator.
Step 2
Disconnect the fan harness connector and the two fan motor sensor wires. Disconnect the inlet, outlet and steam outlet hoses from the radiator. To do this, first loosen the clamps tightening them. Unscrew both retaining nuts on the top of the fan shroud and remove the radiator retaining bracket.
Step 3
Take the radiator together with the fan housing upwards from the engine compartment of the car, slightly tilting it towards the engine. The fan housing is attached to the radiator with three bolts and a nut. Unscrew them and detach the fan shroud and heatsink. Remove the two pillows from the lower radiator mount and assess their condition. Replace torn and loose cushions with new ones.
Step 4
Place the fan housing and pads on the bottom mount before installing the new radiator to the vehicle. Gently lowering the radiator into the engine compartment, insert the pillows into the holes in the bracket and secure them with pins. Then reconnect all disconnected hoses and wires. When connecting the wires of the fan sensor to its case, first insert the protective rubber rings, and then - the cable lugs.
Step 5
Do not forget to check all hose connections for leaks, fill in coolant and connect the wire to the battery terminal. Make sure all drain holes are closed before filling with coolant. To check a removed radiator for leaks, immerse it in a tub filled with water. If air bubbles begin to emerge from the radiator in less than 1 minute, it means that it has through damage and must be repaired or replaced.
