The voltage regulator (relay-regulator) is designed to maintain a constant voltage in the vehicle's on-board network, regardless of the generator rotor speed, the load on the electrical network and the ambient temperature. In addition, this device can protect the generator from emergency modes and overloads, automatically connect the generator's power circuit or the exciting winding to the on-board network.
Necessary
- - screwdrivers with flat and cross-shaped blades;
- - spanner keys;
- - voltmeter
Instructions
Step 1
On modern cars, electronic contactless voltage regulators are used, which do not require adjustments during operation. A failed relay-regulator is not repaired, but replaced with a new one.
Step 2
Turn off the ignition before removing the regulator relay. Disconnect the battery by disconnecting the negative lead from the terminal. Never mix up the wires connected to the plugs. This will damage the regulator relay and increase the load on the generator dangerously.
Step 3
To remove the regulator relay installed separately from the generator, unscrew the nuts securing the device to the car body, and then remove it. Pre-mark with a marker or adhesive tape the relative position of the contacts of the voltage regulator and the wires going to them.
Step 4
Replace the removed one, install a new regulator on the machine in the reverse order of removal. Check the contacts at the connections between the wires and the regulator. Check the tension of the alternator belt. After connecting the battery, check the functionality of the new device.
Step 5
To remove the regulator relay mounted in the generator case, disconnect the wires going to the generator. The generator itself does not need to be removed from the vehicle. To do this, open the plugs or unscrew the nuts securing the wires to the contact stud, depending on the design of the generator. After unscrewing the genset excitation terminal retainer, remove the terminal.
Step 6
Remove the plastic casing of the generator by unscrewing the nuts of its fastening. Find the case of the relay-regulator, and on it - the nuts of its fastening and the screw that secures the terminal of the device to the rectifier bus. After unscrewing these fasteners, remove the regulator. Install in the reverse order of removal.
Step 7
To test the functionality of the new voltage regulator with a fully charged battery, disconnect all consumers except the ignition. Start the engine and set the rpm to around 2500-3000 rpm. Use a voltmeter to measure the voltage at the battery terminals.
Step 8
Compare the measured voltage with the requirements of the specifications (instructions for use and repair). If the readings do not match, replace the relay-regulator. Do not test the function of the device by short-circuiting its plugs to avoid damaging the rectifier unit.
