With its impressive size and heavy weight, the engine flywheel stabilizes the crankshaft speed. But only on condition that the part is perfectly balanced. Otherwise, it can destroy first the rear, and then the subsequent main bearings of the crankshaft in the cylinder block. Therefore, its installation must be treated with a certain degree of responsibility.
Necessary
a set of nut heads
Instructions
Step 1
The flywheel is installed, as a rule, at the end of the engine overhaul. With rare exceptions, its replacement is carried out due to the destruction of the clutch discs (in practice, this has happened), as a result of which it suffered such damage that made it impossible to continue the operation of the specified part.
Step 2
It does not matter which flywheel is installed on the rear flange of the crankshaft, new or "used", it must be carefully checked for balancing. In addition, the state of the working surface designed to accommodate the clutch mechanism is determined, and the seat of the support bearing of the input shaft of the gearbox is investigated.
Step 3
After troubleshooting and elimination of the detected deficiencies (if any), the flywheel is installed on the engine. On a motor dismantled from a car, this task is greatly simplified:
- clean and degrease the contact surfaces of the crankshaft flange and flywheel, - lift the part and, aligning the metal pin with the hole in the flywheel, put it on and tighten a couple of fastening bolts, - tighten the remaining fasteners, - tighten the flywheel mounting bolts in a "criss-cross" pattern, - Perform final tightening with a torque wrench using the torque specified in the repair instructions, in the "Tightening torques" table.
Step 4
Before tightening the flywheel mounting bolts, apply a small amount of adhesive sealant to their threaded part.
Step 5
If the flywheel mounting design provides for compliance with countermeasures for spontaneous loosening of the bolts, then be sure to follow them (installing lock washers or pairing the bolt heads with wire, etc.).
