During the overhaul of an internal combustion engine, there comes a time when the piston rings are installed. To perform this kind of work, it is envisaged to use a special device, but what should a master do who does not have the required device at hand? In such cases, the rings are installed on the pistons by the hands of a mechanic.

Instructions

Step 1

First, the piston ring grooves are cleaned of dirt. After that, the oil scraper ring spring is inserted into the lower groove, and then, having opened the oil scraper ring, it settles over the spring. The installation of the specified ring is required with extreme caution, because it is made of cast iron, and this gives the spare part increased fragility, therefore it is required to avoid excessive expansion of it. After installing the oil scraper ring, turn it so that the ring locks and springs are on opposite sides.

Step 2

Next, a lower compression ring is installed on the piston, which differs from the upper ring in that its lower edge has a groove along the outer diameter.

Step 3

The last on the piston is the upper compression ring made of heat-resistant steel.

Step 4

Installation of compression rings is carried out in a way in which the thumbs of the hands spread the locks of the ring to the sides, to a width sufficient to overcome the diameter of the piston.

Step 5

Putting rings on the piston, all three locks are placed at an angle of 120 degrees in relation to each other, and with this arrangement of the rings the piston is pressed into the cylinder.

Step 6

On the upper plane of the compression rings, the inscription "TOP" should be applied, which in translation from English into Russian means: "Top". The inscription is intended as a hint indicating how exactly the ring should be placed on the piston.
