When clouds of blue smoke erupt from the exhaust pipe, gasoline consumption increases, engine compression is below 10 kgf / cm 2 and oil consumption is high - it's time to change the piston rings.

How to replace piston rings

It is necessary

  • From tools: torque wrench and mandrel for compression of piston rings.
  • And also new gaskets for the head and the pan of the block.

Instructions

Step 1

After the block head and pallet are safely removed, the oil pump is removed, remove the connecting rod caps with liners. Now, gently tapping the hammer handle, push up the piston with the connecting rod and the upper bush. If you are not going to change the earbuds, do not mix them up.

Remove carbon deposits from the top of the cylinder. Now the degree of wear on the cylinders can be determined. This can be done with sufficient accuracy without a bore gauge. To do this, insert the upper compression ring into the cylinder no deeper than 5 mm and measure the gap at the ring joint with feelers. Record the reading (A1). Then lower the ring to a depth of 8 - 10 mm, in the zone of maximum wear and measure (A2).

Using the formula A2-A1 / 3.14, we calculate the wear. If the cylinder wear is less than 0.15 mm, then it makes sense to replace the worn rings.

Step 2

Be sure to check if the new rings will fit before installing. If installed in the upper, non-worn part of the cylinder, the gaps in the joints are:

- 0.30 - 0.45 mm first compression;

- 0.25 - 0.40 mm second compression and oil scraper - everything is fine. Otherwise, you will have to file the joint with a file. For worn-out cylinders, you will need to focus on smaller numbers.

Before installing new rings, roll in the grooves of the pistons. If the ring "bites", then grind it on fine-grained emery paper placed on the glass, focusing on the recommended gaps in connection with the piston.

Step 3

With a piece of an old broken ring, clean the piston grooves from carbon deposits and install the rings on the piston. Before installing the piston in the cylinder, accelerate the joints of the rings with a difference of 90 degrees relative to each other.

Clean the surface of the block from the old gasket and carbon deposits, turn the piston with the mark "P" to the front of the engine and liberally lubricate the cylinder and piston with engine oil. Bring the two crankshaft crankshaft journals to bottom dead center. Install a half of the bushing in the connecting rod and also lubricate with engine oil. To insert the piston into the cylinder, you can squeeze it with a three-centimeter strip of tin and then push it down to the place with light blows with a hammer handle.

We do the same with the second piston, then turn the crankshaft 180 degrees and install the remaining two pistons.

Step 4

Tighten the connecting rod cap nuts, install the block head and reassemble the engine.

At the end of the assembly, fill the engine with oil, coolant, adjust the valve clearances and start the engine.

Run in the engine with the replaced piston rings as new.
