The power of the motor and its stable operation are directly related to the condition of the piston rings. Therefore, timely replacement of these important elements will extend the engine life and, at least, restore its factory parameters.

The task of the piston rings is to seal the piston itself during the compression stroke. The rings installed at the factory, in theory, should remain functional during the entire period of engine operation. However, in practice, there is often a need for premature replacement of rings, associated, for example, with particularly harsh operating conditions of a car.

Features of piston rings

Today, the most common design is that includes 3 separate rings, each of which solves its own problem. The first ring, called the compression ring, receives the main load when the combustible mixture is ignited and is located at the very top of the piston. The second compression ring “supports” the first one and accomplishes almost the same problem. The third element - the oil scraper ring consists of 3 parts (a separator in the form of a spring, plus a couple of additional rings) and prevents engine oil from entering the combustion chamber. Several manufacturers offer single piece oil scraper rings.

Before replacing the rings on the pistons, it is necessary to remove the latter from the engine block of cylinders. This can be done by removing the VAZ2108 engine. There is another option: remove the head of the engine block of cylinders, oil pan and remove the pistons, leaving the engine in place. When reinstalling, it is recommended to replace the crankshaft connecting rod bearings along the way.

Installation of piston rings

Find a clean spot and put new piston rings there. Study the instructions, which will tell you which side you need to put the compression rings (sometimes manufacturers place the necessary information on the packaging). The lower oil scraper ring is installed first. If it consists of 3 parts, then the separator is installed first; no special tool is required. Next, a couple of additional rings are mounted.

The second stage is the installation of the lower compression ring. Take it with your hands and stretch it slightly over the piston crown without twisting or bending. After installing the compression element, make sure that it slides freely in the groove. At the next stage, a tool is needed - a spreader (something like pliers, on the contrary). Using it, stretch the ring over the piston crown and install it in the upper groove. Now you need to check the correct location of the joints of the rings. The gaps should be 120 degrees apart. However, this figure may be different - for clarification, re-read the instructions. After all rings are installed, they must be lubricated with engine oil for better grinding to the cylinder walls.
