Engine oil is a liquid that ensures the correct operation and durability of the components and parts of a car engine. How long you can drive without thinking about the complex mechanism under the hood depends on the correct selection of oil.

Instructions

Step 1

Any engine oil has a number of characteristics, based on which it is selected for a specific vehicle. Among the main ones: types of engines (diesel or gasoline), viscosity and composition of the oil. It is not recommended by oil and car manufacturers to mix different brands of motor oils. Even within the same viscosity properties, oils can have significant compositional differences. For example, some oils may contain detergent additives that may not be compatible with other brands of oils. As a result of mixing, stratification of the oil volume, clotting of incompatible components, chemical reactions can occur, all this will negatively affect the operation of the engine and lead to an early need for repair.

Step 2

If you need to add oil to the engine, and the familiar brand is not at hand, follow the instructions below. First of all, pay attention to the type of oil: synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral. Give preference to the type that has been filled in your engine. Mix synthetics with fully synthetic oil, mineral oil with mineral oil. The exception is semi-synthetic oil. In fact, this is the same mineral oil, but it has undergone additional processing, which has improved its performance characteristics. It is better to mix semi-synthetic oil with mineral oil.

Step 3

The second important factor is viscosity. It should be chosen equivalent to the one indicated for the oil poured into your engine. Other options are not considered in this paragraph, the viscosity must exactly match that that is poured. The only exception to this rule is the viscosity of cheap mineral oils for old engines. By mixing two cheap mineral oils of different viscosities, and pouring into an old engine, you will not make it worse.

Step 4

The next item is additives. In order to maximally protect yourself from incompatibility of the elements of the composition, choose an oil with a minimum amount of additives. Detergents and other additives are usually indicated on the oil container. Choose an oil with the manufacturer, type, viscosity and no additives indicated on the packaging.
