In 1972 "Kommunar" decided to completely, internally and externally, change the legendary tiny car "Zaporozhets", a specialized car for disabled people. The new model received the index 968.
In the new Kommunar car, produced in 1972, the body and radiator lining was changed, reversing lights appeared, and the tires became wider. The aggregate part has changed significantly. In 1974, a modification of the "Lux" appeared, featuring enhanced security. Improved braking system, reinforced windshield, seat belts, etc. Many metal parts of the passenger compartment have been replaced with plastic, and the seat has become more comfortable.
Both modifications were carried out in parallel until 1979, and then an improved version, named 968M, with a convex front part, replacing the shape of the air intakes and taillights (they became rectangular) was released. The Zaporozhets were produced in parallel with the Tavria until July 1994, and at that time new modifications were created and minor changes were made, in particular, the engine was updated.
The main purpose of "Zaporozhets" was to provide people with disabilities with transport. There were many modifications for people with various injuries and the absence of limbs: 968P, 968MR 968AB4, 968AB2, 968MD, 968AB, 968MB. And also an exclusively in-plant pickup 968AP was produced.
