Japanese cars with a diesel engine delight their owners with good performance, efficiency, reliability and ease of repair when operating on domestic roads. To get all these benefits when buying a diesel, it is important to follow simple rules and make the right choice.

Step 1
When buying a diesel car from a stranger, thoroughly check the engine. Make sure the engine is cold when starting. A serviceable diesel engine will start from half a turn. Note that when cold, it makes a fairly noticeable noise. Then start the warm engine, the noise should subside significantly. If in this state it does not start immediately, but only after 3 - 9 attempts, then the piston rings are worn out.
Step 2
Check for smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe when you press the accelerator while the engine is warm. If the smoke cloud is dark, the oil scraper rings are most likely worn out or the nozzles are faulty. White smoke indicates that water has entered the fuel. Bring a piece of paper under the exhaust. If soot appears on it, it means that the fuel does not burn completely.
Step 3
The sound of a running engine should be soft, even, without knocking. The opposite indicates a malfunction of the valves. Try to recognize abnormal noises when accelerating and decelerating by determining the operation of the crankshaft and piston. Open the oil cover. An indicator that a gas breakthrough is occurring somewhere is oil splashing from the oil filler neck.
Step 4
Take a look under the hood. Determine the integrity of the cylinder block and injector nuts. Traces of red or white sealant instead of black indicate that the engine has been tampered with. All bolts securing accessories must be in place.
Step 5
To assess the condition of the liners, warm up the car, turn off and then immediately turn on the ignition. The oil pressure sensor light should come on in 2 - 3 seconds, but not earlier.
Step 6
If the results of all of the above actions did not disappoint you, and you are ready to become the owner of a diesel engine, measure the compression and pressure of the crankcase gases, check the injectors, the cooling system.
