A car enthusiast who wants to buy a new car is often faced with the task of choosing which engine. All other things being equal, many drivers prefer to deal with a diesel unit, which is characterized by greater efficiency and lower fuel consumption. In addition, diesel fuel does not rise so sharply in price, which is important if the car is used frequently.

Opt for a diesel engine when you purchase a large jeep or truck. When used in poor road conditions, the diesel allows for high traction at low rpm.

Check the diesel engine when cold by trying to start it. A serviceable unit will start immediately without requiring extra revs of the starter. A similar preliminary diagnosis should be used in the warm season.
Step 3
Warm up the diesel and listen carefully to its operation. As the temperature rises in the engine systems, the noise should be less than when starting a cold engine.
Step 4
Press the accelerator pedal after the test engine has warmed up. If black smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe, this indicates worn injectors or oil scraper rings. White smoke is an indication that water is entering the fuel system. In both cases, refuse to choose a similar unit.
Step 5
Once again, use careful listening to select a working diesel engine. A high-quality unit has a soft and uniform sound, during operation there are no extraneous noises, cuts and a kind of "strumming". Check by ear the operation of the diesel engine at different speeds.
Step 6
When choosing a diesel engine, pay attention to the filler neck where the engine oil is filled. Oil traces, drips and splashes indicate decompression. This phenomenon can subsequently lead to gas breakthrough, therefore it will be a clear disadvantage of the engine.
Step 7
When purchasing a unit installed on a used car, open the hood and carefully inspect the fasteners and nuts of the cylinder block. Pay attention to possible traces of sealant. If there are clear visual signs of disassembly and repair of the engine, it should not be selected.
