Usually, with the onset of cold weather, motorists find malfunctions in the rear window heater. The most common type of malfunction is a broken current-carrying thread. Replacing an entire heater assembly is time consuming and costly. Moreover, you can carry out repairs on your own.

It is necessary

  • - copper sulfate (copper sulfate);
  • - sulfuric acid;
  • - conductive adhesive;
  • - copper rod with a diameter of 6-10 mm;
  • - a strip of fabric 30 mm wide and 50 cm long;
  • - scotch tape and scissors;
  • - glass cleaner

Instructions

Step 1

To find a malfunction of the rear window defroster, carefully inspect all threads. In this case, all tears and cuts can be detected visually. Then turn on the heating. After a few minutes, when all the filaments are warm, determine the faults by touch (the temperature will be lower at the point of rupture). You can also find the break point with a voltmeter: for this, connect the negative terminal of the device to ground, and slowly drive the positive terminal along the heating threads. Usually, at the point of the break, the readings of the device drop to zero.

Step 2

Wind a strip of fabric halfway around the end of the rod, making it like a tassel. Fasten the fabric on top by tying it with thread. To prepare the solution, take ½ glass of water and dilute two teaspoons of copper sulfate in it. Stir well. Add 0.2-0.3% concentrated sulfuric acid or 0.5-1% electrolyte from the battery to the resulting solution.

Step 3

Connect both terminals of the rear window heater to ground, and connect the wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the prepared brush. While wetting the homemade electrode in the solution, actively and continuously rub it over the break point of the current-carrying element. Areas with a small break in the heating filaments are completely tightened with copper. In areas with large gaps, first irrigate the ends of current-carrying threads with a soldering iron and solder a thin wire jumper. When performing work, avoid getting the solution on the clothes to avoid damage to it. Carry out the process without removing the glass from the car.

Step 4

To repair heating filaments with conductive glue, clean the repair areas with some good detergent and degrease with alcohol. Cut off a piece of tape and stick it on so as to protect the area where the glue is applied. The tape should extend 1 cm to the sides of the injury. If the adhesive is two-part, prepare the adhesive according to the instructions on the package. Apply in a thin 2 mm layer. Use a paintbrush or cotton swab instead of a wooden stick. Remove the tape 30 minutes after application.
