Compression rings are designed to prevent gases from escaping from the combustion chamber into the crankcase. Replacing the piston rings is necessary when a blue color appears in the exhaust gases, a drop in power, a decrease in compression, and an increased oil fumes.

Instructions

Step 1

First, drain the coolant and remove the accelerator pedal cable from the throttle assembly. Carefully disconnect the cable from the receiver by unscrewing the mounting bolts. Remove the timing belt guard, slightly loosen the clamps and remove the throttle assembly hoses.

Step 2

Remove the hose from the valve cover through which the crankcase gases are supplied. After that, unscrew the nuts from this cover and remove it. Disconnect the engine ground wire, if located on the head of the block. Take 17mm wrenches and unscrew the fuel lines. Carefully mark them in different colors so that you don't confuse their location later when assembling.

Step 3

Unscrew the thermostat bracket and slide it to the side if the hoses allow you to do so. Otherwise, unscrew the clamps and remove the hoses from the thermostat. Disconnect the throttle position sensor and idle speed control. Remove the tension roller and remove the timing belt.

Step 4

Unscrew the camshaft pulley retainer and remove it. Be careful not to lose the key. Climb under the car and unscrew the front exhaust pipe to the manifold. Disconnect the oil level and crankshaft position sensor connectors.

Step 5

Disconnect the head mounting bolts and remove it. Unscrew the plug on the pan and drain the oil, then disconnect the flywheel protection and remove the pan. Locate the connecting rod cover and remove it. Push the pistons with the connecting rod up and clean them of carbon deposits, at the same time look at the markings according to which you will purchase new rings.

Step 6

Insert the rings into the cylinder and fit them. Install the piston in the same cylinder from which it was removed. Place the caps on the connecting rods and tighten them. Reassemble everything in reverse order, not forgetting the notes when installing the timing belt.
