Piston rings are open rings that fit tightly into grooves on the top of the piston. They are among the most "influential" parts of the engine, because the performance of the car depends on their condition - the consumption of gasoline and oil, its acceleration dynamics and other indicators. During operation, there comes a time when the piston rings wear out and require replacement, but not everyone knows how to properly put them on the piston.

It is necessary

  • - pistons;
  • - piston rings;
  • - blade-type probe.

Instructions

Step 1

Before installing the rings on the piston, check the size of the clearances in their locks. Place piston assemblies and ring set on a clean work surface.

Step 2

Place the compression ring (top) inside the first cylinder and push down with the piston crown, thereby aligning it perpendicularly. It should fall in the area of the lower limit of the working stroke of the rings. After that, using a blade-type probe, measure the size of the gap in the ring lock (the blade should slide tightly in it). If the gap is out of bounds, make sure not to confuse the rings. Repeat the procedure for the remaining piston rings of this cylinder and all others. After checking and adjusting the clearances, you can proceed to putting them on the pistons.

Step 3

Put on the oil scraper ring, which has three sections. First of all, tuck into the bottom groove of the piston, the so-called spring expander. If the reamer has a counter-rotating tongue, make sure it fits into the counter-bore located in the piston groove.

Step 4

Then install the lower section of the ring. Insert one end of the section into the groove above or below the expander, press it with your finger and thread the rest, moving along the perimeter of the ring. The top section is installed last. At the end of the installation, check the freedom of rotation of the lower and upper working sections.

Step 5

Next, secure the second compression ring (bottom) with the mark facing up. Place it in the middle groove using a special expander. The upper compression ring is worn in the same way. Be careful not to mix them up during installation.
