General and special speed limits in various conditions are established by the Road Traffic Rules (SDA). At the same time, it should be borne in mind that changes are often made to this document. However, before using this information as a guide to action, make sure that you are considering the most recent version of the document.

General speed limits in the city

General requirements that establish the permissible speed level in settlements are defined in section 10 of the Road Traffic Regulations. Clause 10.2 of this section of this document determines that the maximum permissible speed of movement of vehicles in settlements of any type, including cities, is currently not 60 kilometers per hour. At the same time, residential zones and courtyards within settlements are zones of a special speed limit: here a maximum speed of no higher than 20 km / h is allowed.

The listed general speed limits must be applied directly at the entrance to the relevant territory and throughout the entire period of stay in it. So, for example, if you are driving on the highway and see a sign indicating the beginning of a settlement, you should immediately reduce the speed to the permitted 60 km / h. The same should be done when a sign appears warning of entering a residential area or courtyard.

Special speed limits

At the same time, it should be borne in mind that, depending on the specific characteristics of the road situation, additional requirements for the speed of vehicles may be established on certain sections of the road. For example, they are installed when carrying out road works, the presence of sharp turns and other difficulties that can cause an emergency. Most often, in these cases, the so-called special prescription signs are used, which are the designation of the maximum permissible speed in a red circle.

It should be noted that in certain areas of the city, characterized by the least danger to drivers and other road users, the maximum permissible speed may exceed the general established level of restrictions and be, for example, 80 km / h. Informing drivers about this is usually also carried out using signs of special instructions.

In addition, other types of signs may be used in some situations. For example, in some cases information signs may be used informing drivers about the recommended speed on a given section of a city road. represent the speed value in the blue square. Another type of road sign used on city roads is prescriptive signs, which can set a minimum speed limit, which looks like a speed value in a blue circle.
