The VIN of a car contains almost all important and valuable information about a vehicle: from the country where the car was assembled, and ending with its color, year of manufacture and equipment. In order for all this information to become open to you, VIN just needs to learn to read.
It is necessary
VIN code of the car
Instructions
Step 1
Identify the constituent parts of your WINE.
The VIN code consists of 17 characters, which are divided into three parts:
- World Manufacturer Index or WMI;
- descriptive part or VDS;
- distinctive part or VIS. The manufacturer's world index is the first three signs of the VIN, the descriptive part consists of the next six characters, and the last eight characters are the distinctive part. Let's take a closer look at what information can be gleaned by decoding each of the constituent parts of the VIN.
Step 2
Decipher the World Manufacturer's Index: The first character of the index will tell you in which part of the world your car was made, the second - in which country, and the third will indicate a specific manufacturer. The letters of the Latin alphabet from A to H are in this part of the code if the car was assembled in Africa; from J to R - in one of the Asian countries, and from S to Z - in Europe. Also, among the first three characters of the VIN, you can find numbers. If the homeland of your car is North America, you will find numbers from 1 to 5; if it was made in Oceania, then the manufacturer's index will contain the numbers 6 or 7, and for manufacturers from South America, the numbers will be 8 or 9.
Step 3
Decipher the descriptive part of the index. These six symbols are used to describe the type of vehicle: the chassis it is built on, the car model, the body type, and other characteristics. For each manufacturer, these symbols are unique, so for a more detailed decoding, you should look for information relating to your specific machine. The last symbol of the descriptive part of the VIN is used by most manufacturers after 1980 to indicate the type of engine. Note, however, that this is valid only for those car models in the production of which the manufacturer provided for the installation of engines of various types and / or volumes.
Step 4
Decipher the distinctive part. This contains information that applies exclusively to your vehicle. The manufacturer could encrypt in the last eight characters of VIN the equipment of your car, its color, type of transmission. Sometimes it happens that the distinctive part is just a sequence of characters that corresponds to each specific car in the general manufacturer's database and is not deciphered at all. However, what can be said with certainty: the tenth character of any car's VIN code is the code of its year of manufacture. The letters of the Latin alphabet from A to Y correspond to the years of issue from 1980 to 2000, respectively. If the car was produced in the period from 2001 to 2009, then the tenth character in the VIN number will be a number from 1 to 9. All subsequent years, starting from 2010, are again designated in accordance with the Latin letters, starting with A.
