Checking the engine is also checking all working fluids. If it suddenly turns out that the oil level is below the maximum mark, and there are no external signs of a leak, this means that the oil is burning along with the fuel. The reason for this phenomenon may be in worn piston rings or valve seals. In addition to the oil, the coolant level must be assessed. If it was changed in a timely manner, then you will not see a dark brown liquid in the expansion tank.

It is possible to evaluate the operation of the engine by its external signs. If the starter makes a lot of effort when starting, this means that either the ignition is poorly set, or the spark is not powerful enough. Be sure to listen to if the engine runs smoothly, if idle turns are floating. Exhaust emissions from the tailpipe can also indicate a variety of problems. Black or gray smoke indicates clogged fuel injectors, white smoke indicates antifreeze entering the cylinders. Make several passes and listen if there are no abnormal noises at the moment when the engine is cranked up to the limit.

The last step is to check the engine while driving. Evaluate how fast the car accelerates, whether it jerks when picking up speed. Check how the engine pulls the car uphill. If you feel that the motor does not have enough power on the rise, and the speed decreases, then the car has serious problems.
