The main reason for the smell of antifreeze in the car is a leak in the heating system. Also, if the coolant boils, it can be thrown out through the valve in the expansion tank cap.
Instructions
Step 1
Antifreeze has a specific sweetish taste that cannot be confused with anything. Even the smell of it when inhaled leaves such an unpleasant residue on the respiratory tract. The appearance of a leak in the heater radiator, pipes, stove faucet is the main reason for the smell of antifreeze in the passenger compartment. Most often, leaks appear in the radiator. It is highly discouraged to pour powdered sealants, soda, mustard into the cooling system. Yes, the gap will be clogged, and there will be no leak. But only these powders will settle on the surface of the pipes, in the thermostat, and in the engine channels. And this will lead to frequent repairs of the cooling system.
Step 2
If the smell of antifreeze appears, then you need to find the cause of its occurrence. You should start with the stove. If the radiator is damaged, it must be replaced. In case of minor cracks, the radiator can be sealed or treated with a sealant. Be sure to degrease the surface just before applying a sealant. Then only the quality of the repair will be at a high level. If the damage to the radiator is very large, then it would be wiser to replace it. The new one will be able to serve you for at least five years. Therefore, by installing a new radiator, you will forget about the smell of antifreeze in the cabin for a long time.
Step 3
As for the stove faucet and rubber tubes, their repair is impossible. In the event of a leak, you will have to turn off the heating system and continue driving to the place of repair. But you can continue driving without turning off the heating, if the leak is insignificant. Place a rag under the leak so that the carpet is not damaged. Typically, the crane is installed in the body of a car, four hoses are connected to it. Two go to the heater, and two to the cooling system (to the engine block and to the thermostat). Even a leak on the pipes under the hood can cause an antifreeze smell to appear in the car.
Step 4
But not only damage to the heating system can be the cause of the smell of antifreeze. Often, due to the boiling of the coolant, it is ejected through the outlet valve on the cover of the expansion tank. This happens due to prolonged movement in low gears (in a traffic jam) with an inoperative cooling fan. A defective thermostat can also cause the coolant to boil. If the arrow of the temperature gauge reaches the red mark and the fan does not work, try to stop as soon as possible. Let the engine cool down, then connect the fan to the battery. But if the thermostat is not working, this will not help; you will have to replace it.
