The braking system of a car is the most important unit and requires proper attention and care. If the brake pads on the rear pads are worn down to the rivet heads, or when the diameter of a pair of pads has become much less than the inner diameter of the brake drum, they should be replaced so that there are no unpleasant consequences.
Necessary
- - a hammer;
- - chisel;
- - drill and drill;
- - pneumatic press;
- - lathe.
Instructions
Step 1
Place the vehicle on a lift or inspection pit. In the latter case, fix the front wheels by placing stops under them on both sides. Raise the car with a jack and remove in sequence - the wheel, brake drum and brake pads. Inspect them if their body has significant defects that may interfere with their functions, or if the size of the friction linings is less than acceptable, replace them.
Step 2
Using a hammer and chisel, cut off the worn friction lining, pre-fixing the brake pad in a vice. Then knock out the rivets from its holes.
Step 3
Select a friction pad that is the correct size and fits snugly to the surface. Drill the appropriate holes in it, using the brake shoe as a template if not available. To do this, select the drill diameter. If the rivet has 5mm, then you should take 5, 3-5, 5mm, if 8mm, then 8, 3-8, 5mm, respectively. Attach the friction lining to the brake pad using the clamps and drill the holes.
Step 4
Countersink. To do this, select a drill with a diameter slightly larger than the rivet head. Drill the previously made holes to leave a gap of 2-3 mm.
Step 5
Place rivets in the holes and flare them. Attach the pad firmly to the last. Then use a pneumatic press to flare. Make sure that the diameter of a pair of shoes is less than 3 mm of the diameter of the brake drum. Otherwise, bore the shoes on a lathe. When there is a working out on the rear brake drum, make its groove to the repair size.
