Malfunctions in the vehicle's steering system are classified as the most dangerous. There are several reasons for this, but perhaps the main one is the quality of Russian roads. The steering system can also fail due to violations of the rules of operation, unqualified maintenance and repairs and exceeding the service life of its assemblies and parts.
Instructions
Step 1
Drivers usually find out about the malfunctions that have arisen by several external signs, including knocking, beating, increased backlash, difficult steering, noise in the power steering, leakage of working fluid.
To eliminate any malfunctions, the steering system must be disassembled. When dismantling, do not forget to make marks at the locations of the adjusting washers, so that later during assembly everything will fall into place again.
Step 2
The bipod and shaft are disassembled using pullers. After the steering gear is completely disassembled, every detail must be carefully inspected. So, if obvious signs of wear are found on the surfaces of the rollers, worm and bearings, they must be replaced.
Step 3
The shaft sleeves must also be replaced if the gap between them exceeds 0.10 mm. Continuously wobbling wheels and premature wear of the tire treads remind of a malfunction of the steering rods. In this case, the replacement of hinges, bushings and pivots will have to be done.
Step 4
A knocking noise while driving may indicate gaps in the tapered steering link pins. This malfunction is eliminated by simply tightening the nuts. A complete replacement of the tie rods is carried out when the tie rod end is badly worn out. In case of slight wear, it can be simply replaced.
One of the most common problems is a malfunction of the steering rack oil seal. In this case, the steering rack must be disassembled, carefully inspected and replaced with defective parts.
Step 5
The steering rack assembled after repair is tested at a special stand, where its performance is checked.
Step 6
The last stage of the repair is the adjustment of the steering rack already installed on the car, during which the wheel alignment is fixed. This operation should be carried out in a car service using a computer stand on a special lift.
Step 7
The most difficult part is the repair of the steering column, which consists of many parts. Dismantling it assumes a clear sequence of dismantling parts. After inspecting and replacing defective parts, the steering column is also assembled in the reverse order. In case of serious defects, the entire steering column must be replaced.
