The timing belt is designed to drive the camshaft from the crankshaft, as well as the pulleys of the generator and water pump. A worn belt can break, causing serious internal damage to the cylinder head due to collision of the valves with the piston crowns. Therefore, you should regularly check the condition of the belt and replace it with a new one when signs of wear or damage are found, as well as after the expiration of its resource.

It is necessary

  • - new belt;
  • - a set of spanners and socket heads;
  • - screwdriver;
  • - white alcohol.

Instructions

Step 1

Disconnect the negative battery cable from its terminal. Get to the timing belt cover by removing all interfering parts: air filter, power steering pump, alternator belt pulley. Remove the plastic belt cover by unscrewing its fastening bolts.

Step 2

Set the crankshaft to TDC (top dead center). To do this, slowly rotate the crankshaft using a suitable spanner wrapped around the pulley bolt counterclockwise until the marks on the crankshaft pulley align with the index marks on the rear camshaft cover. Secure the crankshaft by removing the plug in the clutch housing and inserting a blade or large screwdriver into the flywheel ring teeth.

Step 3

Mark the direction of travel on the old belt, loosen and remove. At the same time, make sure that the crankshaft does not accidentally turn when the belt is loosened or removed. In order to loosen the belt tension, disconnect the crankshaft pulley with a washer, loosen the tension roller mounting nuts and turn this roller so that it does not touch the belt. The belt can then be easily removed from the camshaft pulleys, idler pulley and pump (water pump) pulley.

Step 4

Before putting on a new belt, clean the pulleys and idler pulley from dirt and old grease and degrease them with white alcohol. Slide the new belt over the crankshaft and camshaft pulley so that it does not sag. Check again that the marks on the rear camshaft cover and the crankshaft pulley match. Then slide the belt over the idler pulley and the cooling pump pulley. Install the crankshaft pulley in place and tighten the fixing bolt to a torque of 100-110 Nm.

Step 5

Turn the tensioning roller to the working position and tighten its nut, making the required timing belt tension using a special wrench or a snap ring puller. The cutout on the outer disc of the roller must align with the rectangular protrusion on the inner disc of this roller. After tensioning the belt to the desired level, turn the crankshaft two turns and check that all marks are aligned. If they do not match, correct them.
