VAZ 2110 came off the assembly line with 16-valve and 8-valve engines. The former are more powerful, faster, but rather expensive to maintain. Yes, and replacing the timing belt with them is a little more difficult than with 8-valve ones, since the engine has two camshafts.
Engines with different volumes and with different types of gas distribution systems are installed on the VAZ 2110. The simplest examples are eight-valve engines with two valves for each cylinder (intake and exhaust). But 16-valve, more powerful, have 4 valves per cylinder. Of course, there are two camshafts, since the design of the engine does not allow for the drive from one. It follows that the crankshaft should rotate two shafts, not one. And the timing belt should be longer.
Replacing the timing belt on an 8-valve engine
The procedure takes a short period of time, if you only know what you are doing. And you need to know a little, the main thing is how to correctly place the marks on the shafts. First remove the cover that covers the timing belt, then loosen and remove the alternator belt. Then lift the right side of the machine, remove the wheel and the protection behind it.
Now that the generator belt has been removed and access to the crankshaft pulley has appeared, it is necessary to align the shafts according to the marks. Rotating the crankshaft clockwise, you need to align the marks:
• on the flywheel, it is made in the form of a line;
• on a camshaft with a rib mounted on the engine.
Keeping the flywheel from turning with a screwdriver, unscrew the bolt securing the alternator pulley. Be careful not to damage the teeth that are necessary for the engine speed sensor to function. This applies to injection engines. Otherwise, the ECU will generate an error.
Loosen the idler roller and remove it. There is an adjusting washer under it, do not lose it. Now you can easily remove the belt and start installing a new one. We put the roller, bait (do not tighten) the nut. We put the belt on the crankshaft pulley, with a slight stretch we install it on the camshaft pulley. We pass it through the roller and the pump, pull it up with the roller. Check the alignment of the marks before installing the belt.
Installing a belt on a 16-valve engine
It's a little more complicated here, but you can still perform the replacement fairly quickly. First, remove the protective cover, which is attached to the engine with six bolts. Then we raise the cars on a jack and remove the wheel with protection. Place the car on neutral and place stops under the rear wheels. Use a screwdriver to hold the crankshaft by the rim teeth. This is how it is best to rip off the bolt on the pulley. If you place a stop under the teeth on the pulley, you can damage them. As a result, the ECU will not work properly.
Removal is carried out in the same way as in the case of an 8-valve engine. Just keep in mind that in 16-valve there are not one, but two rollers. Tensioner (with two holes for a special key) is installed from the passenger compartment. And the support one on the side of the generator must be installed, there are no holes for the special key in it. Do not be lazy, check if the marks on the shafts match before putting on a new belt. This will allow you to do everything efficiently, and for the next 50-60 thousand kilometers you will not know any problems with the timing mechanism.
