Replacing the timing belt on a Toyota Corolla car requires high qualifications from the performer and the availability of a specialized tool. But with a strong desire, this work can be done independently, especially on old engines.
The timing belt of a Toyota Corolla car must be replaced after 75 - 100 thousand kilometers, depending on the type of engine and is indicated in the instructions for a particular engine. The belt must be replaced in advance, since a broken belt often leads to catastrophic consequences - the pistons bend the valve and, as a result, expensive engine repairs are required.
Preparatory work
To replace the timing belt, place the Toyota Corolla on a level surface and secure with the parking brake. Disconnect the terminals and remove the battery from the vehicle. Disconnect the high voltage wires and remove the spark plugs.
Remove the A / C and power steering pump belts. On a manual transmission, engage any gear; if an automatic transmission is installed, fix the flywheel through a special slot in the hydraulic clutch housing.
Work order
Unscrew the nuts on the valve cover and lift it slightly. Remove the nuts securing the upper timing belt cover and then remove the cover.
Align the mark on the crankshaft pulley with the mark marked with the number 0 on the lower timing belt cover. In this case, the hole on the camshaft pulley marked with the number 2E should be at the top, and through this hole the mark on the engine block should be visible. If the marks do not match, crank the crankshaft one turn.
On the right side, remove the cover opposite the crankshaft pulley. Loosen the tension on the alternator belt and remove the belt. Secure the crankshaft pulley with a sturdy mounting paddle or a suitable metal pin. Do not insert the paddle too deep to avoid damaging the rear belt cover. Remove the pulley bolt. The bolt is very tight, so use an extension wrench.
Unscrew the bolts and remove the lower timing belt cover, also remove the guide washer. Loosen the tension roller bolt, push the roller away from the belt and secure with the bolt again. Now remove the timing belt.
Remove the tension roller spring. Unscrew the bolts and remove the idler and idler rollers. Inspect the rollers and check for defects. If there are traces of wear from the belt, traces of rust or other defects, the rollers must be replaced. When rotating by hand, the rollers must rotate no more than half a turn, otherwise the rollers must be replaced.
Reinstall the casters. Place the spring on the tension roller, then push the roller all the way back and secure with the bolt. Check if the marks on the pulleys have shifted and, if necessary, correct their position.
Starting from the bottom up, slide the timing belt over the pulleys, with the loose part of the belt on the side of the idler pulley. Release the tension roller and tension the belt, while the marks should not move. If the marks have shifted, reinstall the belt.
Reinstall the guide washer and the lower timing belt cover. Turn the crankshaft 2 turns and check the alignment of the marks again. If the marks do not match, remove the belt from the camshaft pulley, correct the position and again check the coincidence of the marks by turning the crankshaft two turns. Repeat this operation until all labels match.
Reinstall the upper timing belt cover and alternator belt pulley. Slide over the pulleys and tension the alternator belt. Screw in the candles and connect the high-voltage wires. Tighten the valve cover mounting bolts.
Replace and secure the battery. Check if all parts are in place and in the correct order. Then connect the terminals to the battery and start the engine. Check if the ignition is installed correctly, it may need to be adjusted.
