There are currently no universal spark plugs on the market that fit any vehicle. However, choosing the right candles is quite easy if you approach the issue wisely.

Correctly selected spark plugs are the key to excellent engine performance
Correctly selected spark plugs are the key to excellent engine performance

It is necessary

  • - instruction manual for your car or vehicle passport (PTS)
  • - protective gloves
  • - candle wrench

Instructions

Step 1

Determine your engine type.

Just look at your TCP or your car manual if you are at a loss to answer this question. If you have diesel, then you need glow plugs or glow plugs. For a gasoline engine, you need spark plugs.

Step 2

Unscrew one of your old candles. If access to the spark plugs is not limited by anything, then it is quite easy to do this with a special spark plug wrench. Raise the hood of your car, locate the candles, remove the wire with the contact from one of them and carefully unscrew it.

Step 3

Go to the store. There you can either choose a candle according to your make and model of the car, or present an old candle, with the help of which the consultants will carry out the selection of a new set.

Spark plugs with "A" threads are generally suitable for light vehicles. The length of the plug, the size of its head and the glow rate are determined by the car manufacturer, and you can choose the number of electrodes and the material from which they are made.

Step 4

Select electrode material.

The standard spark plug is equipped with one copper electrode. In addition to copper electrodes, spark plug electrodes are made with the addition of iridium, yttrium and platinum. Candles with such electrodes cost several times more expensive than their copper products, but refractory metals give a much greater resource, that is, candles last longer and burn out more slowly. You also get a more stable and powerful electrical discharge, which is important for the engine's operation: the stroke will be smoother, without dips in the ignition.

If funds allow, then make a choice in favor of platinum spark plugs: fuel consumption with exhaust toxicity will decrease by several percent, and replacement of plugs will not be necessary for many years. If there is no extra money, copper candles are also suitable, although they will be somewhat less reliable and durable.

Step 5

Determine the number of electrodes you want.

Standard plugs are available with one side electrode, improved ones with several. Manufacturers claim that multi-electrode spark plugs help the engine run smoothly and make the ignition system more reliable. The advice here can only be the same as when choosing an electrode material: use common sense.
