Sometimes a motorist has to remove the steering wheel on his own in order to replace or repair it. You can remove the steering wheel yourself, the principle of fastening the steering wheel in many car models is very similar.
- First of all, it is worth remembering that all manipulations with the steering wheel must be carried out with the battery disconnected (for this, you must disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery). You will need the most basic tools: a 22mm or 24mm hex socket wrench, a 5.5mm hex socket wrench and tweezers or a flat screwdriver.
- The ignition key must be put in the lock, and the steering wheel itself must be turned 90 degrees in either direction. On the back of the steering wheel (behind its top) you will see hex nuts (5.5mm) that hold the steering wheel on both sides by attaching it to the steering shaft. In some car models, the steering wheel mounting nuts should not be abruptly unscrewed to the end, since at the moment of a sharp disconnection of the steering wheel from the steering shaft, you can get injured (the steering wheel is noticeably spring-loaded).
- It is necessary to loosen the nuts and unscrew them. They should not be pulled out, they are securely fastened in order not to get lost.
- Now you need to remove the driver's airbag module and unfold it. The horn of the horn should also be pulled towards you. You will see a yellow connector that must be removed from the steering wheel hub - for this, use tweezers or a small screwdriver to clamp the latch on the connector and carefully remove it.
- The steering wheel must be fixed in a horizontal position, after which the key must be removed from the ignition switch (the steering wheel itself must be firmly fixed).
- Now, using the key, you can unscrew the bolt in the middle of the steering wheel while holding the steering wheel with your hand. Then you can remove the steering wheel.
- After the steering wheel has been removed, it is necessary to fix the contact ring of the airbag with a pin of a suitable diameter (this will prevent arbitrary rotation of the ring). The spring under the steering wheel can also be removed.
