The ignition coil is an integral part of the motorcycle starting system. Failure of the coil may result in the inability to start the engine. To ensure the proper functioning of the motorcycle starting system, the ignition coil must be regularly checked for defects.

Causes of breakdowns

Premature failure of a motorcycle ignition coil can have the following reasons:

1. Burnout of winding insulation as a result of ignition with the engine off.

2. Break in the power supply network.

3. Increase the gap between the spark plug electrodes.

4. Break of insulation.

Visual inspection

Before checking the ignition coil, it must be removed from the motorcycle engine. Next, a visual inspection of the coil is carried out, as a result of which mechanical damage, traces of burnout or oil stains are revealed. If the above signs are found, the coil must be replaced with a new one.

Testing equipment

Checking the ignition coils is carried out at stands that are available at specialized service stations. Such a stand can be assembled from existing components and in a garage, which will allow the motorcycle owner to check the technical condition of the ignition coil on his own. The stand includes a separate rechargeable battery.

Checking at the stand

Testing the coil on the bench includes the sequential execution of the following tests:

1. Check the functionality of the primary winding of the coil. The low-voltage terminals of the coil must be connected to a resistance meter, which must correspond to the standardized value specified in the operating documentation.

2. Check the condition of the secondary winding. An ohmmeter is connected to the high and low voltage terminals of the ignition coil. If measured in p.p. 1-2 resistance does not correspond to the normalized values, the coil must be replaced with a new one.

3. Check the resistance of the "ground". To do this, connect the resistance meter with one contact to the coil body, and close the other at each of the terminals in turn. If the resistance is less than the specified value, the ignition coil must be replaced.

4. Check the coil for inductance. If the inductance value does not correspond to the value specified in the documentation, the coil must be replaced.
